Obituary of Douglas John Mossop
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas John Mossop at The Garden Terrace Residential Care Centre in Kanata, Ontario, on Friday, November 21, 2025, at the age of 90. Doug was a beloved husband to Shirley Roberts in his earlier years and a supportive, caring partner to Audrey in his later years. He was the wonderful father of Jerry (Luanne), Carolyn (Ian), and Tracey (Steve), and a cherished grandfather to Leanne, Shane, Brett, Jayden, Vanessa, and Braxton. Predeceased by his parents John and Elsie, his brother Roy Mossop, and his sister Phyllis Johnston. Loving uncle to his nephews Doug Jr., Kevin, Rick, and Mervyn, and his niece Brenda.
Born in Toronto in 1935, Doug graduated from Ryerson in Toronto and spent a brief but memorable time living in Montreal before settling in Ottawa. He began his career with Computing Devices, where he met his future wife, Shirley. Doug went on to build a thriving career with Canada Post Corporation in Ottawa. His work eventually took him to Alberta, where he lived for many years, always looking forward to the Calgary Stampede and falling in love with the natural beauty of the West. After returning to Ottawa in 2013, Doug treasured the time he spent with Carolyn and Tracey and their growing families, and he also found companionship and happiness with Audrey, whom he met later in life at his retirement residence.
Doug was the first to offer a hand to anyone in need. Helping others brought him his greatest joy, and that quiet generosity defined the way he moved through life. A true athlete at heart, he thrived in sport—playing, coaching, and cheering from the sidelines—especially when one of his children was on the team. His favourite sports were basketball, baseball, hockey, and curling, and he especially cherished the camaraderie he found at the City View Curling Club in Ottawa, where he was a past president. Doug also gave back to his community through his involvement with the Ottawa Lions Club and the Knocker’s Club, supporting charitable causes and fund-raising efforts. He was hard-working, well-educated, and an avid reader, and he was never happier than when he was making someone laugh with a joke or a well-timed prank. Tracey and Carolyn are deeply grateful for the caring staff at Garden Terrace.
Douglas will be laid to rest at the Pinecrest Cemetery. A private inurnment and a Celebration of Life will be held in the spring to honour and remember him.
We loved and respected Doug both before Alzheimer’s and after. Through every stage, the love he held for his family and his desire to help others never wavered. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with gratitude, admiration, and love.
