Obituary of Jonathan MacKenzie
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Jonathan Alexander MacKenzie (Jon) on December 13, 2025, in Ottawa, Ontario, at the age of 75.
Jon leaves behind his beloved wife Helen and his three cherished children: Matthew MacKenzie (Cassie), Caitlin Launderville (James), and Maria MacKenzie (Jason). He was a proud grandfather to Grayson and Hailey MacKenzie, and Vera Launderville.
He is also mourned by his brother Rod MacKenzie (Margaret) of Cobourg, Ontario, and his sister Martha MacKenzie (Louis) of Aylmer, Quebec. Jon will be deeply missed by his nieces and nephews, Iain and Maura MacKenzie, Genevieve and Mackenzie Vezina, as well as Helen’s family, his extended family and friends and colleagues in the medical community.
Jon was born in 1950 in Kingston, Ontario, to Dr. Charles Grant MacKenzie and Helen Joan Finnigan, both of whom predeceased him. He graduated from McMaster Medical School and practiced medicine for over 40 years until the time of his passing. He cared immensely about his work as a physician, the community he practiced in, and his patients. His colleagues and those he worked alongside became friends and trusted confidants. A kind and compassionate physician, Jon will be fondly remembered by the many people whose lives he touched.
Jon was an avid photographer since his high school days, a hobby he truly loved to share with everyone in his life. Music was a significant part of his life, which was evident through his love of guitars. He loved nature and being outdoors, whether it was on his long bike rides, speed skating the length of the canal, or his endless hours on the ski slopes with family and friends. One of his greatest joys was spending time on the Ottawa River, boating, kayaking, fishing, or swimming with his loved ones.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Heart institute for their extreme compassion and excellent care of Jonathan before his passing.
A visitation will be held at the Highland Park Cemetery in Carp, Ontario, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations may be directed to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Giving Options - uOttawa - Heart Institute
