Obituary of Maro Mavromatis
March 7, 1943 - May 14, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Maro Mavromatis in hospital on Wednesday May 14th, 2025 at the age of 82
Beloved wife to the late Nicholas, loving and dedicated mother to both George and Spero, daughter in-law Sherry, proud Yia Yia of grandsons William, Michael, granddaughter Courtney and great granddaughter Lily. Predeceased by mother Sophia Aliotis, uncle Spero Andrews and many other aunts, uncles and special family members.
Maro was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and moved to Ottawa several years later, attending both Connaught Public School and Glebe Collegiate as well as several post secondary institutions. After completing school, she worked several part time jobs and spent many summers travelling to Greece with family, where she met Nicholas. After marrying in Greece in 1964, they settled back in Ottawa and the Greek community, where she taught Sunday School for a few years and volunteered at many events.
She was a longtime public servant, working first at National Defense and eventually for many years at Revenue Canada where she met so many cherished friends and colleagues. After retiring, Mom spent her summers tending to her plants and garden while enjoying being a grandmother, despite it being from afar most of the time. Her personable way of living life and being social even resulted in her making many good friends online from all over North America while playing her beloved Farmville.
Thank you to Dr Mohammed for taking good care of mom for many years, she appreciated your dedication and attention. Thank you to Dr Hacker for his kindness along with the many dedicated nurses, PSW's and physiotherapists at Carefor Health & Community Services who always made her feel reassured and well taken care of. Also a special thank you to all the doctors, nurses and PSW's at both the Ottawa Hospital General Campus and Bruyère Health Saint-Vincent Hospital that took care of Mom in her final days, she appreciated all of you.
We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Father Alex, whose visit to Mom's bedside provided her much peace and solitude when she needed it most.
