My deepest condolences to Mai Nghiem’s family and friends.
I had the privilege of working closely with Mai for over 10 years as her supervisor in the Census Operations Division. She was an exceptionally dedicated and hardworking individual — someone you could always count on to get the job done, no matter the challenge. We faced many high-pressure situations together, and her calm, determined approach was instrumental to our success.
Mai often spoke with pride about her children and their accomplishments. It was clear how much her family meant to her. She balanced her demanding work with her deep love for them, and it was something I truly admired.
I was supervising when she first began facing health challenges, and I had hoped she was through the worst of it. Learning of her passing — through a message to my personal phone while I was on holiday in Toronto — was a complete shock. I wish I could have returned in time to attend her funeral and pay my respects in person.
Mai was far too young. We will miss her smile, her warmth, and her unwavering dedication. She made a lasting impact on all of us who worked with her.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Sri Kanagarajah
