Obituary of Courtenay Jackson Levans
It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for his life that we announce the death of Courtenay Jackson Levans.
Courtenay passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025 surrounded by his wife and children.
Courtenay was born on May 1, 1940, in La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara, Guyana. He received his early education at Queen’s College in Georgetown, where he formed lasting friendships that remained dear to him throughout his life. At the age of 25, he emigrated to New York to pursue studies in photography. In time, he made his way to Toronto and, in 1975, settled in Ottawa—the city he would call home for the rest of his days. It was there that he met Starr, who would become his beloved wife and lifelong companion.
Courtenay had a remarkable gift for nurturing deep, lasting connections. A voracious reader and gifted storyteller, he uplifted, encouraged, and ministered to many with both his wisdom and his calming presence.
Courtenay spent his career working as a systems analyst, but it was his deep faith that truly shaped his life. He led quietly by example, devoted to God, his family, and his life long passion for music—especially when played by his wife, children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents Edward Josephus Levans, and Millicent Eileen (nee Jackson) Levans, his brother Edward ‘Guitar’ Levans, and his sisters Evelyn (Patrick) Kum and Shirley Levans.
Courtenay is survived by his wife of 49 years, Starr, his greatest joy and closest friend, along with his adoring children—Vania, Timothy, Deborah, and Andrea—and his cherished grandchildren, Eloise and Lissandra. He will also be dearly missed by many relatives and friends.
Courtenay’s visitation will take place on Friday, August 15, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa.
