Obituary of Sandra Gorman

GORMAN, Sandra (Née Reaume)

November 24, 1937 – August 10, 2025

The Gorman family is saddened to announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother Sandra Gorman at home on August 10, with her daughter Judy holding her hand. Sandra was predeceased by her parents Reginald Lloyd and Christina Violet, older brother Lloyd, “big sister” Sylvia, and her caring husband Dannie. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Chris (Sally Fletcher), Judy (Chris Viger), Susan (Bill Brizzell) and Stephen (Teresa De Marco). She also leaves behind her adored grandsons Daniel (Tracy Barbero), Torin, Peter, great grandson Benson and granddaughter Ella, with whom she enjoyed a very special relationship.

Sandra’s love of reading began as a child growing up on Beverly Street in Ottawa. One of her fondest memories was getting her first library card. She went on to teach elementary school in Hamilton and Deep River, ON, before marrying Dannie. They moved to Syracuse, NY, and began raising their family while Dannie completed his doctorate. Remarkably, after returning to Ottawa, Sandra completed a BA at Carleton University while raising their 4 kids in Manor Park. Sandra loved to travel and flourished in Paris during Dannie’s sabbaticals. Wherever she lived, Sandra made life-long friendships.

Sandra was a proud Canadian and insisted her children see our beautiful country from coast to coast, twice! She was often a woman ahead of her time as a strong supporter of women’s rights, the NDP and many political causes— sometimes involving her children in these campaigns. Sandra was passionate about all music but folk music always held a special place in her heart, never missing the Mariposa folk festival. She loved animals, especially her yellow labs. Sandra was a devotee of CBC radio and a news junkie till the end.

Judy and her husband Chris cared for Sandra for the last five years at the family cottage, on Muskrat Lake in Cobden. The Gorman family is extremely grateful for the care and compassion of Sandra’s PSWs, especially Jennipher and Jesse.

A Memorial Reception for celebrating Sandra’s life will take place between 11AM and 1PM on Friday August 22, 2025, at Pinecrest Remembrance (2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa).  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Humane Society would be appreciated.
