Richard Van Tassel

Obituary of Richard Van Tassel

It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Stanley Van Tassel, who left us peacefully on October 21, 2025, at the age of 94.

Born in Digby, Nova Scotia, on May 13, 1931, Richard was the beloved son of the late Orbin Van Tassel and Mabel Tucker. He was predeceased by his sisters Jean, Audrey, and June, and by his brothers Kenneth, Guy, Russell, and Dennis. He is survived by his brother Ronald.

On July 30, 1960, Richard married the love of his life, E. Ruth Carter, and together they built a life full of love, laughter, and family. He was a devoted father to Rachael (Emanuel) Van Tassel and Rosalind Helgason, and a proud grandfather to Rick (Liz), Arthur, and Katrina (Antonio).

Before his marriage, Richard worked for Algom Nordic in Elliot Lake. After settling in Ottawa, he began his career as a milkman for Borden’s Dairy, later joining Silverwoods Dairy where he became an owner-operator. He continued his work with Sealtest Dairy Products under Ault Foods Limited until his retirement in 1996.

Richard had a calm and kind spirit and was happiest with a puzzle on the go and a Blue Jays or Ottawa Senators game on TV. In his later years, he enjoyed his life at The Waterside, where he shared his love of puzzles with friends and joined in weekly bingo.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital and The Waterside for their kindness, care, and support in Richard’s final days.

He will be remembered for his warmth, gentle humour, and the steady, loving presence he brought to every part of his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Ottawa Heart Institute in Richard’s memory.
