It didn't take long after working with Phil to become friends. He was one of the best at what he did , a hard worker and a thoughtful friend. The news of his passing did bring sadness and grief, but knowing he was close to his daughter before it happened does bring solace. Phil Butler will be missed, but most importantly, he will be remembered.

Kind, fair, humble, smart, selfless, loyal, just some of the words that come to mind when I think of my brother. He kept me sane with that smart, dry whit, and the best sense of humour ever. Somehow always after talking to him, I thought everything was going to be ok. We could laugh about our aches and pains, politics, or the state of the world and anything in between and he would put a spin on it that would have me in tears of laughter. I spoke to him on Saturday night just a few hours before he was gone, he was happy and healthy , he had spent the day with his favourite people, work was going well, he had a good check-up that week. We were pretty sure Mr Trump was on his way out. We laughed, solved the world’s problems and all was good. It all changed so quickly and within a few hours our family was rocked to its foundation. He was always the guy doing random acts of kindness quietly in the background always avoiding attention, he didn’t just say nice things, he actually did nice things for us all. We will miss him always. Rest In Peace Phil — The rest of us will look out for Candy — till we meet again.

I would like to express my sincerest condolences to Phil’s family. We are all shocked and saddened by the news. Phil was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. We met about 4 years ago when I joined the House of Commons, and we got to know each other from working on a major technology project. He was very diligent and precise in his work (and learning that he was a pilot confirms what we already all knew: he paid attention to the smallest details). My greatest memories of Phil will always be crossing paths with him on Queen street on our way to work or meetings. He never hesitated to say hi with a big smile and stop for a quick chat. Sometimes our chats would turn into one of those famous HoC “sidewalk meetings” with others joining in the conversation. I will truly miss those encounters and having Phil on my team. Phil was a special person and he will be dearly missed. Rest in peace Phil.

It was with great shock and sadness to find out of the untimely and unexpected loss of my friend Phil, whom I had never met in person, yet I will never forget. Phil was my tenant for the last 11 years; a sensible, trustworthy, reliable, helpful and honest man. A man with whom I only spoke over the phone, yet we became friends. We shared stories, news and family milestones. He was a content person who loved his family. However, what brought him immense happiness and pride in his life was becoming a grandfather. The photos of his granddaughters he shared with me indicated his joy and deep love for them. Please accept my sincere and deepest condolences. May his memory, during this difficult time, give all of you strength. I know he will be in your hearts for ever. Rest in peace my dear friend, Ilias Koutsogiannopoulos

My sincere condolences to the family of Phil Butler. I met him while working on the project team for a new data centre for the HoC. I am an architect (the building kind) working for Real Property. Phil taught us a lot about enterprise architecture. And yes, we joked about who really was the architect! I would often meet him on Queen Street while both of us were on our way to work in the morning. He would always say hello and we often stopped to chat. He was a friendly and caring person - willing to take the time to share his knowledge and get to know his co-workers. I will miss those encounters. I am very sorry for your loss. Phil was a special person.

My deepest condolences and prayers to Phil's family and friends. I met Phil 6 years ago when I started at the House of Commons. He was one of few early on that made me feel welcomed. He was patient and knowledgeable. He took the time to explain something without ever making you feel out of place. The times we had one-on-one discussions it was never about work. It was always about family. He and I shared a love of family and our children. It was always an easy chat. The kind where you know when someone is actually listening to you. He was engaging and had a strong laugh; one that you could just feel. When people say "oh, he was a nice guy". Well, Phil was a genuinely nice guy. I will miss our chats, his dry wit and of course that laugh. You will be missed. RIP Phil.

First it’s beautiful to see all the loving kind comments about my big brother. It is comforting to know he touched so many others lives in such a meaningful way, not just his family’s. I always felt a special bond with Phil as we were the both redheads, middle kids, Virgo's and born in Churchill MB. I was over the moon when he & Shirley produced a new little redhead girl to add to our tribe. I tried to talk him into calling her Catherine but he said the world wouldn’t be able to handle two of us. He loved to tease me. When I think of him I see that impish little grin and hear his laugh. I’m eternally grateful for the time I that I did have with him. He will live forever in my heart and through his loving daughter Candice, she is his gift to us.

I have always been excited, genuinely happy whenever Phil joined one of my projects. I could go on and on about his dedication, professionalism and expertise, but that was not all. I never had the pleasure of meeting your father but I have come to know you and from the messages I have read from his colleagues, it is obvious that you have very similar traits. It was wonderful to get to know a little bit about your father through your eyes. The proverb says “the apple did not fall far from the tree”. It is also clear you were the apple of his eye, a “Father/Grandfather on Steroids”, as well as a loving Man, Brother, friend and Colleague. Phil made a huge impact on a lot folks in our three business (Consolidated Communications (CCI)(Netricom), Plus Technology (PTG) and The Attain Group, where he worked with us. A newbie when he joined us in 1988 at CCI (he had been working at Hernando's hideaway), (BTW Phil had a huge afro and beard when we first met Phil). He helped with accounting systems and our first PC (DOS), and as our business expanded Phil was our IT and accounting guru. As we continued to grow, we moved from various offices, and Phil was all hands on with fit-ups and setting up our offices. He was talented, became self taught in CAD and then in 1992, was one of a few handful across Canada to achieve his RCDD status with BICSI (huge accomplishment). He help a number of roles, Operations Mgr, Branch Manager (when we became Netrciom) and then off to Toronto to help interface accounting and work systems with JD Edwards. I remember before he left for Toronto he had become a Pilot (yep no moss on this guy) and I was his first solo passenger, as we soared across the Ottawa River and Gatineau's, I totally trusted Phil. Guy Lamarche and I opened Plus Technology in 2003, Phil helped create our business systems in Access to run the business, and when he left Toronto joined the business as Operations Mgr until 2008. His talents also helped The Attain Group (the Hanson's current home) to build an Access Database to run the business and was still active until we upgraded to a new system not more than a couple of years ago. Family was Phil, he loved his daughter Candice soooo much, she was his everything in the early years. We all remember the little cutie redhead, at all our CCI Xmas parties, CCI picnics and around the office, Phil was a Dad on steroids', Candice was so fortunate to have such a loving and supportive Dad. Phil loved his Dad and Mom, and would do anything for them, always helping them in Martintown (wonderful people). As of course his siblings, who he supported with so much love (Valerie join us at CCI for a period of time). When Phil moved to the HOC with our long time co-worker Paul Kung, that was definitely a powerhouse cabling infrastructure design team (both were such at team at CCI (Phil loved Paul), I continued to keep in touch with Phil, but his love and focus was a Grandfather to his beautiful granddaughters, they were now the most important part of his life. As I type this with tears in my eyes, so many found memories of Phil, you will be greatly missed, as you make your way to the riser in the sky, thanks for all of your support for over 30 years and your friendship. Hugs to all his family, the Butler's had such a lasting effect on the Hanson's. All our love Dave and Noreen Hanson (Allison/Dave/baby Ellie and Kim/Brenden/Shea) X0X0
