Phys Ed. teacher for all of us at Laurentian High in the late 50's and early 60's. Great guy, good class discipline, strong sense of humour. Sincere sympathies to his family and thanks Joe, thanks, you helped us prepare for our own lives. I still keep my socks pulled up at all times--no lookin' sloppy!

Joe and I are related through our grandmothers, making us second cousins. But we also taught together at Lisgar Collegiate, and regularly had coffee together with other Lisgar retirees on Thursdays. Joe was highly regarded both as a teacher and as a person by everyone. He was a kind and supportive person in all ways. I send my sympathies to your entire family. You have many good memories of a wonderful person to support you .

I was very fortunate to have this gentleman as a teacher and mentor in the 1950s. being raised by a single parent the teachers at Ottawa Tech were very important in my developement as person. Coach Joe was a gentle giant although not that tall. I was not good enough to make the senior basketball team but was the team manager for coach Joe for 2 years. With only 8 players the coach and I got to play during practice I learned how to treat others and coach a team. My favorite memory was that each year he rented two cars from Tilden and with the assistance of another teacher they would drive us to Cornwall twice a year to play the two Cornwall High Schools. Each trip Coach Joe reminded us that we may have more fun at the dance after the game if we did not win. On these trips I also got to play which was special. I was about 5 ft 8 in at the time and had to Jump ball against CFL hall of fame Moe Racine , he did not have to Jump. Thanks to coach Leggett and Beck I went on to coach Basketball at EOIT as a student and many years of minor hockey. To His family you must be very proud to have such a great person as your father, may he rest in peace

My condolences to John's family. He was so proud of you all; excited to show me new pictures on his tablet when I visited at the Perley. John was always a welcoming and patient host even though I know it was challenging for him to hear me. Well read, tech savvy and interested in the world around him John was an ageless gentlemen and good conversationalist. I give thanks that he made it through the war years despite his dangerous profession and continued to serve his country and community for decades. He will be greatly missed.

To the family of John (Joe) Leggett (412 Sqn Ret'd), The Sqn was saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Leggett. He was a brave young soul who joined the war effort and will forever be part of the rich legacy and history of the Royal Canadian Air Force and 412 Squadron. He was part of a select fraternity of World War II pilots who risked everything to defend the freedoms that we now hold dear. I read with interest an article from Lisgar High School describing when Joe flew a flypast for Winston Churchill at the Uplands Base in Ottawa and then was posted to Red Hill to escort bombers across th English Channel. From there to Sicily, Croatia and then back to Canada to start the next phase of his life training the minds of young men and women as a teacher. He lived an exceptional life serving Canadians in the battlespace and in the classrooms. On behalf the 8Wg Commander Col. Ryan Demming and 412 Sqn Commander LCol Al Merilainen and all the members of 412 Squadron, I send our sincere condolences on the passing of Joe. I attended Lisgar from 1958 to 1962 and played all sports at every opportunity. When Joe arrived the whole atmosphere around the gym on the playing fields improved. His low key, friendly, and supportive manner encouraged us all to participate, develop new skills and enjoy ourselves. He placed our health, personal development and teamwork ahead of winning, and I think this brought out the best in everybody. Thanks for a life well-lived.

Being now past ninety, I have always had the greatest respect for all the young men, like John, who joined the military during WWII. John, evidently , did a great job at everything he did whether in military or civilian life and through his education was well prepared to meet the challenges of his generation. We always liked to talk to him after church services. We'll miss him! May he RIP! He certainly deserves that!

I am so sorry for your loss. I liked your dad very much. He was always very nice to me even when I backed the old Impala up and hit and bent his fence. I was scared to death having to go tell him the next day but he made it pretty painless.

Ninety-nine years: such a long good life , filled with many memories. John was my first phys-Ed teacher at Ottawa Tech, 1957. About 20 years later we touched base again when he was kitchen crew chief for the CVUC Men’s Club meeting and I was part of his team.
