I was saddened to read of Gil's passing, and want to extend my condolences to all the members of his family. I had the great pleasure of working with Gil as a colleague during my 15 years at The Hospital for Sick Children. He was passionate about his work, had a great depth of expertise, and was always focused on ensuring that his labs provided the best possible service in support of our young patients. He was a delightful colleague -- always in good humor and always with a positive attitude. I had not seen him for many years, but seeing the photo of his smiling face was a wonderful reminder of a great colleague and human being. Again, my sympathies.

MY sincerest condolences to all of Gil's family, and to his wider laboratory and health services family. I had the great pleasure of working for Gil on two occasions at Sick Kids - my approaches to laboratory services was changed for the better. Kua hinga te totara i te wao nui a Tane (The totara has fallen in the forest of Tane) A totara is a huge tree that grows for hundreds of years. For one of them to fall is a great tragedy. This proverb is said when someone of importance passes. The Totara is a native tree of New Zealand. In our Maori spiritual world, Tane, a son of Ranginui (the Sky Father) and Papatuanuku (the Earth Mother), is the God of the forests. Rest in peace Gil - your legacy lives on.

We extend our deepest condolences to our Hill family cousins for the passing of a very special man, father, husband, brother and uncle. His quiet, keen observation skills, his masterful intelligence and curiosity, his pride for his family, his sharp, dry wit and his lifelong commitment to deep caring and loyalty will be much missed, even as these are traits he has passed on to his children.
