Professor Ebanks introduced me to statistics at Western in 1973. I had barely made it out of grade 12 math and was petrified to take stats. He made it relevant to me and launched me on a career that has included research and stats. We crossed paths often at Western and I will always remember his smile. My condolences to the family of this generous man.

Eddie was my mentor and advisor when I went to UWO back in the 1970's. But he was more than a mentor and advisor to me, he was a dear friend I never forgot and always welcomed seeing. My deepest condolences to Heather, and all of Eddie's family and friends. I will miss him, he was truly someone I admired, respected and loved.

When I would meet someone from another department at Western, I would invariably say that I was from the same Department of Sociology as Eddie Ebanks. We would be immediately connected. Such a brilliant, warm and welcoming man. My heartfelt condolences to Heather, Natasha and their families. Rod and Liz Beaujot

From the Morrison family, we’d like to extend our deepest condolences to Eddie’s friends and family. Our families lived next door to each other for more than a decade and we loved our interactions with Dr. Ebanks who always seemed relaxed, happy, and ready to roll out his big deep laugh.
As a childhood friend of Natasha’s, I spent a lot of time at their house. It always felt sophisticated and worldly because of their talk of current events, their broad palates, and even their art collection. I patterned my developing self a bit by observing from this well traveled, intelligent and adventurous family up close.
My fond memories extend from the numerous sleepovers which included Shirley Temples curated by Dr. Ebanks, to a dinner with just Natasha’s parents while she was at camp which gained me my first exposure to curried foods, to interviewing Dr. Ebanks for my Gr.13 English independent project. I feel lucky to have known Dr. Ebanks and Natasha who is so much like him in many ways.

Some photos of the flag flying at half-mast today in honour of Mr. Ebanks (with some snow in the air).
I've known and been friends with Natasha for more than 40 years now, and I knew Mr. Ebanks to be wonderful, sweet and charming. The deep love that he shared with Natasha, was one that everyone could see and feel. Deepest condolences to Natasha, Heather and the family.

Sandy and I were so saddened to hear of Eddie’s passing. He put up a huge battle over the years since his first and second strokes. Eddie’s optimism was never ending. Sandy and I golfed with Eddie and Heather many times, while we lived in Ottawa. Eddie was a mentor to me, as he was to so many of his many students and he always had such a great sense of humour. We will miss him dearly. Our deepest condolences to Heather and the family. Andy and Sandy Siggner

I offer my heartfelt condolences to Eddie, Heather, Natasha and family. All of us who knew and worked with Eddie over the past many years are deeply feeling your loss. Eddie was a much beloved colleague and friend. He was a champion of causes, who never failed to weigh in on a debate, but always with respect and good humour. He made time for others, and was often sought out by colleagues and students for his sage advice. His service to the university was exemplary, not only as Department Chair and member of Senate, but as outspoken proponent of faculty causes through his leadership in the faculty association. As an academic, his work on Latin America and the Caribbean was widely respected, and touched and inspired all of us who have dedicated our careers to the study of the region. Eddie was a titan, a force to be reckoned with. His life and his work will be remembered always.
Ted Hewitt, London and Ottawa.

Dear Heather, Natasha, and family. I was so saddened to hear of Eddie's passing.
Reading your tribute, Eddie (I know you are listening), I have to say you were my mentor and role model. I continue to take you to class all the time. I tell my students of my Population Economics professor, who spent the first few weeks of class telling us story, after story, and how I sat wondering what the rise of Chilean wine had to do with population economics, and when on earth you were going to teach us from "the books." What I came to know in those first few weeks of learning from you, Eddie, was that your stories not only exemplified the contents of the books, but also paralleled the research. And, Chilean wine, it has alot to do with population economics. You gave me one of the best lessons I learned as a student, I pass that lesson along in my stories to students, everyday.
I also came to know you, Eddie, as a friend. You were always quick to include me and other students for supper. Your cooking was awesome, your hospitality so welcoming. Your house was always filled with such great laughter. Thank you, Eddie, for all of the meals and friendship.
Thinking of you Heather and Natasha and how lucky you were to know such a great human being.

Eddie was a kind and supportive mentor to his students and a brilliant professor. I hold fond memories of Dr. Ebanks’ population studies seminars in graduate school at Western, which were often interspersed with fascinating accounts of his field work and experiences in South America. Eddie was an inspirational teacher and a positive role model. My heartfelt condolences to the family of Eddie Ebanks.

I am saddened to hear about the passing of Dr. Ebanks. My deepest condolences go to Heather and their entire family. It is no great consolation at this time, but reading about him, it's clear that Dr. Ebanks had a meaningful life, full of professional achievements and close relationships with family and friends.
I met Dr. Ebanks only a few times as a student around 2005-2007 at the annual meetings of the Canadian Population Society and Canadian Sociological Association. However, I still remember to this day that he was a tough but warm professor. My favourite memory of Dr. Ebanks was at the CSA conference in 2006, when he was attending the session that I was presenting in. When I saw him in the audience, I got a little nervous because from the past few CPS conferences I attended, I knew Dr. Ebanks paid close attention and often asked direct, piercing questions to presenters. After I delivered my talk, however, Dr. Ebanks gave me a loud round of applause and said something like, "Lisa, you gave a great presentation again." His kind compliment
meant a lot to me, and moments like these kept me pursuing an academic career which is at times challenging.

Eddie was a terrific human being - such a model for all of us, a kind, caring soul who was infectious with his presence in any "room." To me personally, he was a mentor and friend. Eddie persuaded me to run for UWOFA president just because he believed in me and that I would do a good job for our members. Eddie's service to and almost reverence for UWOFA and its constituents was unparalleled. I always remember Eddie's perspective on the rights of anyone; and with respect to faculty members, I recall he often said, "a professor's application for a sabbatical should be a blank piece of paper." His sense of humour was so exquisite. And, as a fellow runner with Eddie at Western, I was privileged to see and joke with Eddie almost every day during our parallel times at Western. Truly, in Eddie's demise, there has passed away a glory from this earth.
Sadly and with profound respect for Eddie and his family,
Don Morrow

Dear Heather and Natasha ... please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of dear Eddie. l have such fond memories of this kind gentleman, from the early 1970's when he was a professor in the Dept. of Sociology at Western and I was a secretary in the department. I was a young single Mom with two daughters, one of whom was disabled. Eddie was a friend to me; even brought little gifts for my girls at Christmas time. I can still hear his laugh even these many years later. He will be greatly missed by so many.

Dr. Ebanks was my statistics professor in the 1970’s at Western. He was also my neighbour in Broughdale. I was an adult student who struggled with statistics. After each lecture I could be found sitting outside his office seeking help. Help that was generously given with patience and a warm smile. I managed to pass this required course only because of this always available professor . I became a teacher, teaching special students. Dr. Ebanks exemplified the teacher I worked hard to emulate. A wonderful teacher, fondly remembered.

Dear Heather and family,
i was weepy all day after hearing that Eddie had passed. When i started working at uwo, i shared a room with Veron Estick and remember him taking me to grad club to meet his Caribbean posse. Eddie welcomed me with open arms along with his famous smile, wit and humour. I quickly learned that was just Eddie, was not only a tremendous person but a tremendous academic …crazy smart is a term i often used when describing him. If I had one wish, i would wish there be many, many more Eddies in this world. I know there is nothing we can say to diminish your pain but just know i always smiled when thinking about him when alive and will continue to always.
