I did not know Stephen but his research and huge body of work regarding Medieval English towns has been so instrumental to my own work recently. I have been reading his works with great appreciation for not only his knowledge but also the warmth and humanity with which he approached his subjects. I wish I could have sent a message to him to thank him directly. I send my best wishes and condolences to the family and hope that it brings some comfort to know that his life's work is so valuable and appreciated.

It was with great sadness to hear of the passing of Steve .We met Steve through our love of cats . He figured out that a stray cat was getting fed at multiple houses in our neighborhood . Long story short " Buddy " is still a well and beloved member of our household (thanks to Steve and Judy) . May you rest in peace Steve , you kind and gentle guy . Rob & Debbie Malone .

My deepest condolences to all his family. I had the opportunity to work with Stephen during my years at the Museum . It was a true pleasure having a chat with him or simply being guided by his expertise, as he was quite generous, professional and an overall very kind person! Many memories that I will treasure my friend. God speed dearest Stephen and rest in peace! Louise Renaud.
