Obituary of S. Michael Jenkyns

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stanley Michael Jenkyns of Ottawa on June 11, 2022, aged 79. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Virginia Elizabeth (Nash), children Megan Brooks (Robb) and Andrew (Christine) and granddaughters Emma, Jamie, Chelsea Brooks, Heidi and Stella Jenkyns.  He is survived by his sister Elizabeth Morrison (Richard), brother John Jenkyns (Sandra) and two nieces and two nephews and families.

Michael was born August 8, 1942 in Nottinghamshire England to Stanley Meredydd Jenkyns and Jean Tomlinson during an air raid.  He spent the first few years of his life in England before moving to Canada in 1945 with his parents. They lived in several cities before settling in Ottawa in 1960. As a young boy he was quite mischievous and a long-time boy scout, travelling to the Phillippines for the jamboree in 1959.

He attended Carleton University for International Studies and enjoyed a long, 32 year,  career with CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency).  He met and married his love, Virginia Elizabeth, September 28, 1968 in Ottawa where they raised their family.  They took two postings overseas to Indonesia and Kenya where Mike shared his love of travel and other cultures.

Michael enjoyed history and genealogy, travelled over England and Wales for research and attended large extended family reunions.

He was an active Mason and was Past Grand Historian and Past Honourary Grand Senior Warden in the Grand Lodge of Canada in the province of Ontario.  His love of history led him to pen a book on World War II and his father’s flights in the RAF as well several on Masonic History.

He loved model trains and always had a train room where he could tinker away.  He was known as “Papa with the Choo Choos” and was very proud of his 5 granddaughters.

Michael enjoyed gatherings with family and dear friends, lunches at pubs, trips to Masonic events in different cities and travelling around the world. He will be remembered for his sense of humour and wit.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider a donation to the charity of your choice.  The family wish to thank the staff at Queensway Carleton Hospital, Civic Hospital & Bridlewood Trails for their compassion and care of Michael.
