Dorothy Empringham

Obituary of Dorothy Joyce Empringham

We are sad to announce the death of Dorothy Joyce Empringham (nee Hunniford) who passed away peacefully with her family by her side after a brief illness. Dorothy was born on May 15, 1930 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to the late Margaret and William Hunniford. She is predeceased by her sisters Joan Kilpatrick and Patricia Desorcy.

Dorothy graduated as a registered nurse in 1957 from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing. After graduation, she worked as a nurse in Sioux Lookout where she met her future husband of 63 years, Paul Empringham. In 1959, Paul and Dorothy married and settled in Ottawa.

Dorothy was a proud and loving mother to Stephen and Patricia (Michael Clement). Dorothy stepped away from nursing to pursue her greatest joy which was raising her two children.  She was a very proud and loving grandmother to Lexi and Ryan Clement.  She was their biggest supporter in all aspects of their lives.

Dorothy's greatest passions in life were her family, friends, genealogy and travel. She was very proud of her Irish heritage. Dorothy and Paul shared fond memories with some of their closest friends of over 60 years, Joan and Fred Living. Joan, along with Dorothy's many cherished friends, will miss her dearly. Dorothy was an avid traveler and would often incorporate her passion for genealogy in her travel pursuits.

We would like to offer our deepest thanks to Kyla in the ER at the Queensway Carleton Hospital along with all the nurses and doctors in the ICU.

Friends and family can send their condolences to The Highland Park Cemetery website.  Memorial donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation or Crohn’s and Colitis Canada.
