Obituary of Margaret Colburn

It is with deep sadness that we share that our beautiful and loving matriarch, Margaret (Peggy) Grace Colburn passed away on January 7, 2023 due to complications arising from a fall. Peggy was a loving and supportive mother, a Grandma extraordinaire, and a proud and doting great Grammy. She was a kind and loving sibling, mother-in-law, sister-in-law and aunt, and a loyal and supportive friend to many. Peggy lived her life to the fullest and in service of others, and always looked for the best in every person and situation. She infused positive energy, joy, and basic human kindness into everything she did.

Peggy was predeceased by her devoted husband, Harold Nelson Colburn in 2011. She is survived by her loving daughters Kathleen, Colleen, Mary Louise, Janine and Dianne; her beloved grandchildren Jasmine, Cara, Jessica, Lindsay, Jennifer, William, Gregory, Kyle, Brian, Kaitlyn, Alison and Julia; and seventeen cherished great grandchildren.

Peggy was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 6, 1926. She was the youngest of 5 children born to Adelaide and Albert Hopper, and was the last surviving member of that family. Peggy spent her formative years in Winnipeg where she lived a simple and happy life, despite hardships incurred by the loss of her father when she was only 6 years old. In Winnipeg she met and married her beloved Harold in 1948, before heading off on a decade long adventure living in numerous small communities in northern Manitoba, Edmonton and Boston, finally settling in Ottawa, which would become her home for the following 60 years.

Peggy was a devoted wife and mother but managed to pursue and maintain a variety of outside interests as well. She was a faithful and very active member of the Westboro United Church congregation, and served her community in a variety of volunteer positions, including at the Ottawa Heart Institute and the Canadian Museum of Nature for over 50 years.

Peggy was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by her family and all who had the opportunity to know her.

A celebration of Peggy’s life will take place on Saturday, May 13th at the Pinecrest Reception Centre.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Ottawa Heart Institute, the Canadian Museum of Nature, or to a charity close to your heart.
