Obituary of Dilip Kumar Chakraborty
It is with great sadness that we are announcing the passing of Dilip Kumar Chakraborty on May 12, 2023. He is survived by his loving family, including his wife, Suravi (nee Barory), and daughters Mousomi and Shampa. He is also survived by his brothers Deepak (Tripti), Alok (Lily) and sisters Sukla, Sipra (Dulal), and Swapna (Sailen) and his beloved nieces, nephews and great nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Pradip.
Dilip was born on April 5, 1937 in Digboi, Assam, India. He completed his Bachelors of Civil Engineering at Bengali Engineering College (B.E. College) in 1958 before coming to the U.K. to work and continue his post graduate education in Structural Engineering at Leeds University. He then returned to Kolkata, where he married Suravi and they had their first born, Mousomi. In 1969, Dilip moved back to the U.K. with his young family for another five years and had their youngest, Shampa. The family came to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1974 and made their home there. He worked in both the private and public sector before he retired in 2002. He had made many close friends and colleagues in Edmonton and Calgary, even after he moved to Ottawa with Suravi and Mousomi in 2009. In addition, he made more close friends within his neighbourhood and within the Bengali community within Ottawa.
He was an avid fan of playing and watching sports, enjoying the outdoors, following current events, playing bridge, enjoying Indian and Western performing arts, travelling, and of course spending time with his family and friends. He had a very dry sense of humour and enjoyed hearing and telling stories. When he could, he was happy to help his friends, family, and colleagues when they needed it and as he got older, he was very appreciative of loved ones who helped him.
