Obituary of Despina Dalabiras

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Despina Dalabiras (born Nicolainas) after a courageous battle with cancer. She passed peacefully in the presence of her family at the age of 76, on December 8^th at Bruyere-Saint Vincent Hospital.

Predeceased by her parents, Christophoros and Eugenia, and her nephew, Christopher. She is survived by Christos, her husband of 55 years, her son Peter, brother Emanuel, sister-in-law Noula Dimoulis (late Alex), nephews Costa (Nicky) and George (Sia), niece Tia (Costa); as well as many grandnephews, grandnieces, cousins, friends and extended family.

Despina was born on June 6, 1947 in the small Greek town of Kokkari, Samos. As a young girl, she made the long journey with her family to Montreal, Canada. In her early 20’s, Despina became the first member of her family to both attend and graduate from university. Despina in fact earned two degrees, one in teaching and another in psychology, which was an unprecedented achievement at that time. In her career as a teacher, Despina encouraged and educated many young children, and worked with the province of Quebec on developing its core curriculum. As an academic, she was involved in complex university research, contributing to several early behavioral studies in psychology. In 1989, Despina moved with her young family to Ottawa, where she became a cherished member of the Hellenic Community.

Despina’s passing leaves all who knew her with heavy hearts. She will be remembered for her sharp intellect, her love of art and poetry, her devotion to her faith, and her fierce determination in the face of challenges. Our deepest appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Bruyere-Saint Vincent Hospital for the dignified and compassionate care given to her during her stay.

Visitation: 10 AM on Thursday, December 14 at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1315 Prince of Wales Dr.

Funeral: 11 AM at the church followed by an internment at Pinecrest Cemetery, 2500 Baseline Rd

Following the internment, all are welcome to a celebration of life and luncheon at the Hellenic Event Center (next to the church).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Despina’s memory be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Hellenic Community of Ottawa.
