Obituary of Dr. Sunil Das
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Sunil Das, loving husband to Sipra, father to Polly (Prosenjit Mukherjee) and grandfather to his precious granddaughter Trinity.
Dr. Sunil Das was a kind, humble and highly accomplished man who touched many lives. He obtained his Ph.D in Radiophysics from the University of Calcutta. He was a Professor of Engineering at numerous institutions including the University of Ottawa, University of California at Berkley, Stanford University, Institute of Computer Engineering at National Chiao Tun University in Taiwan, University of Calcutta in India, and Troy University. He has over 375 publications on a variety of topics, including switching and automata theory, digital logic, built-in-self testing, and microcode optimization.
Dr. Sunil Das has brought great honour to Canadian engineering through his numerous achievements, as recognized by international awards. Dr. Sunil Das was a recipient of the IEEE Computer Society’s highly esteemed Technical Achievement & Meritorious Service Award and named a Golden Core Member of the Society in 1998, the C. V. Ramamoorthy Distinguished Scholar Award of the Society for Design and Process Science (SDPS), and the Troy University’s Wallace D. Malone Distinguished Faculty Award and a co-recipient of the IEEE’s Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award.
He had a big heart and was always willing to share his knowledge, help others, mentor his students and develop lifelong friendships. He will be greatly missed by all the people who were touched by his warmth and kindness, including his family, friends, colleagues and students.
