Sarah Harding posted a condolence
Saturday, March 30, 2024
As the Dean of the Law School at Dalhousie University, the Schulich School of Law, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Moyra Nicholson. Moyra clearly lived a very full and rewarding life, expertly balancing family and career. As the youngest person to graduate from law school, she was obviously brilliant and a trailblazer. It’s hard not to marvel at her life, her independences and her strength of character.
With sympathy

Moyra probably had more impact on agricultural and on food/quarantine policy than anyone in Canada. She was knowledgeable, precise and prepared to challenge nonsense. Since she'd written or help write all of the pertinent legislation, she had a special ability to resolve issues and manage the litigation burden inherent in regulatory agencies. Her strength and willingness to step forward saved more than a few senior bureaucrats and Ministers from making dumb decisions.

Just a short note from the Brown family to express our condolences on the passing of a truly remarkable person, Moyra. We grew up with the Nicholson clan, and of course your father Dave was a fierce Bridge player with my Dad. I am not sure if Moyra played Bridge, but after reading her lovely obituary, my dad and Dave would never have stood a chance! She was a true example of living life to the fullest.

I worked with Moyra for many years at Agriculture Canada and then the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. I have been sharing the sad news of her passing with other former colleagues and have received many responses - more than I recall for any other news that I have shared. And all of the responses reflect a warm and grateful respect, and admiration for the incredible lady that she was. To say that she was a force to be reckoned with is an understatement. Many recall her gravelly toughness, her acute intelligence, her passion and her dedication. Some also recall her love of smoking and scotch, and the fact that, when she decided to enter or leave the parking lot at work, you counted yourself lucky not to be in the way of that big old car of hers. A number of the women who commented noted what a trail blazer she was, even before knowing all that she had done. She would never tell anyone at work how old she was; what an amazing accomplishment to work effectively to the age of 82. We all missed her when she left. The rest of her life, outside of work, sounds amazing too. She was an icon. She did it her way: passionately, completely and unapologetically. Thank you, Moyra. You were truly an original.

Please accept our sincere condolences on behalf of the Zayachkowski family. Having been next door neighbors for over 20 years, I distinctly remember Moyra as a very hard working and determined woman who worked full time as a lawyer with the Government of Canada while raising 4 children and running a household. It was only when I grew older and joined the legal profession myself that I came to better understand exactly how significant Moyra’s professional achievements were, as one of the first women in Canada to graduate from law school and enjoy an uninterrupted 60 year career as a practicing lawyer. She certainly was an inspiration for future members of the profession!
Boris Zayachkowski.

I worked with Moyra from 2002 until she retired from CFIA Legal Services. When I started she welcomed me with open arms and thought me many things, not only law. Moyra was a force to be reckoned with in our office and never backed down from a challenge. She left a very positive impression on me, and for those of us who remain at the office we still talk about her to this day. My condolences to all her children and family.

Derek, Sarah, Abby and Michael please accept my deepest heartfelt condolences on your mom's passing. Having literally grown up in your house I always considered Moyra my second mom. She was kind, generous, loving, fearless and just a tad stubborn. All of which served her well in a long vital and accomplished life.
Every year I received a Christmas card and gift and birthday wishes. . She was a special woman and a big part of my life.
Rest in peace warrior princess

Derek, Sarah, Abby, Michael and families; our deepest condolences. I have many fond memories of my Aunt Moyra albeit only got to see her on family visits back and forth from Nova Scotia and Ontario!
Her visits back to Halifax in the later years were especially memorable as she recalled many memories of her early life.
She was tenacious but always kind, funny and as said… fiercely independent!
She lived a good life and glad to have been part of that!
She will be missed!
Corinne
