Obituary of Barbara Smith
Barbara Yvonne Smith (nee Christensen), 88, of Stittsville, Ontario, died in Almonte, Ontario, on November 15, 2024.
Barbara was born in Bella Coola, British Columbia, on May 17, 1936, to Helmer and Marg (née Marshall) Christensen. She was raised in Bella Coola along with her sister Wanda and her brother Aubrey, the family relocated to Anahim Lake in 1946.
Barbara enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in December of 1954 and served in Foymount, Ontario, until November 1957. She returned home to Quesnel, where she married Larry Smith in April 1963, built a homestead in Pan Meadow in 1967 and had her son Scott in 1969.
In 1971, Barbara returned to Ontario where she started her career with the Canadian Forestry Services moving onto Environment Canada until she retired in 1991.
Barbara loved the outdoors and animals (horses and dogs were her favourites) she was an avid reader and loved puzzles and sports. You didn’t dare call the house during a hockey game!
Barbara is survived by her son, Lawrence Scott Smith and daughter-in-law Kimberly Smith (nee Cross), of Almonte, Ontario, and her sister, Wanda McGill (late Bob) of Surrey, British Columbia and her long-time friend Louriene Ford (Fordy) of Stittsville, Ontario. She is preceded in death by her parents, Helmer and Marg Christensen, her brother Aubrey Christensen (Elenor) and her partner Jean Duncan.
At Barbara's request, there will be no service or viewing. Her ashes will be spread at the Christensen family monument in Kersley, B.C., in the spring of 2025.
Memorial donations may be made to the Dementia Society of Canada. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Orchard View by the Mississippi in Almonte, most especially the 4th-floor team, for their support, kindness and care.
