please accept my belated sincere condolences...
RIP Peter Sr. ...
I remember Peter Sr. coaching (with my father Sam) in the Bel Air outdoor hockey league in the early 1970s... Peter Jr. was the best goaltender in the league... it was a fun neighbourhood: Patton MacLean (and his siblings), Vince & Eddie Crupi, etc. (and so many wonderful parents like Peter Sr. with wisdom, integrity and fun) ... and I recall attending St. Andrew's elementary then St. Joe's Jr. High (and St. Basil's Church) with all Peter Sr.'s children (Bobby, Joanne, Peter Jr. and Paul)...
Sincerely,
Coady Cormier (resided on Field Street in Bel Air Park from 1964 to 1973, and now residing in Calgary, Alberta)

I was in Mr. Bangs' history class at Glebe Collegiate. Where, with his sonorous voice, he instilled in me a deep appreciation and lifelong love of history. Particularly Greek and Roman, that further drew me to the works of Julius Caesar, Tacitus, and Plato. Mr. Bangs had that rare talent of making the subject intensely interesting and speaking directly to the soul. A good man whose memory burns bright in the hearts of his students.

“PJ” Bangs was a wonderful friend to my father Norm Cohrs. They were colleagues at Glebe Collegiate. PJ and Lynn were family friends, and such a joy to be with. I remember “Mr Bangs”, particularly, as we drove together when I was a summer student. His sense of humour and his mentorship were so cherished for me, I remember it to this day. It seems as though PJ could always find the light and bright side of anything-always! A wonderful fellow. The summer we drove together, there was a top forty tune on with the words “do the hustle” in it. Being late for the drive to school one day I was cheerfully admonished to “do the hustle!”.. well PJ, you’re off to be with the lovely Lynn again.. better “do the hustle!”

Mr. Bangs, as I knew him, was a great and patient history teacher and hockey coach. His good nature and genuine interest in his students and players was inspiring, and made high school a better place to be.

Mr Bangs was a beloved teacher. Others have mentioned his leadership in the team teaching/seminar approach. He also mentored guest teachers from the US and UK who enriched and challenged our points of view. I am grateful, too, for the amazing outing he organized to New York City, with an obligatory educational stop at Fort Ticonderoga. Like many others he influenced, I went on to love, study and use history. It is good to learn that he also enjoyed a rich family life. Thank you for sharing him with his students.

Peter (PJ) was one of many great history teachers at Glebe. He was far and was someone who would answer as question that some might have found flimsy, but he wasn't judgmental and would really listen. He was part of the new way of teaching that included lectures and seminar style classroom time. They called it "Team Teaching" and it helped some of us who would encounter this method when we went to University. PJ also was the sponsor for the Glebe Collegiate Curling Club and I was proud to have been one of the winners of the PJ Bangs Trophy. My condolences to the family. Cary Honeywell

Deepest sympathy to the Bangs family on the passing of Mr. Bangs. I loved his history classes at Glebe and the history trips he bravely guided so many teenagers on. A teacher I fondly remember for his humour and approach.

Dear Paul, Suzie and family!
I was saddened to hear of Mr Bangs passing. I will always remember his sense of humour, kindness and smile. He truly was a wonderful man and he will be missed. I can only imagine the reunion he had with his beloved wife. He doted on her, and loved her deeply. Parkinson’s is a very cruel disease, and he’s at peace now. RIP Mr Bangs! Your Dad and grandpa lives inside your heart now. XOXO

Colleague. Mentor. Friend. Peter, we will miss your equanimity, sense of humour, concern for others and your quiet determination. You were truly one of Nature’s Gentlemen and as Ian McKercher said “a Glebe Great”
Unfortunately, due to a foot infection, I-will be unable to pay my respects in person.
Thank you, Peter, for enriching many lives, including my own.

I had the pleasure of being taught by Mr Bangs at glebe. In grade 12 we took a history trip to Boston and he asked a few of us who were sports fans if we were interested in attending a Red Sox game at Fenway . Well of course we did and when most of the class went on a history walking tour, he took the rest of us to the baseball game. I also had the chance to play juvenile hockey for him at Bel Air and things came full circle when I had the opportunity to coach his grandson Jacob in Kanata for minor hockey. Mr. Bangs was a great teacher, great man and left an impression of all who encountered him at Glebe. We were better people after that

Mr. Bangs was one of my most favourite teachers at Glebe in the early 1970's. His sense of humour was omnipresent. He recommended me, along with another Grade 12 history student, in April 1974, to represent Canada in a Commonwealth Student's Meeting, sponsored by the Royal Commonwealth Organization. All Ottawa high schools were involved in this 2 day conference at the Lester B. Pearson Building. It was a most gracious gesture on behalf of a teacher and one never forgotten, close to 50 years after the fact. Over the last few years, Mr. Bangs resided in the same retirement home as my mother and I had a chance to see and speak with him on occasion. May wonderful memories help his family through this sad time. May he rest in peace.
